William Lawrence "Bill" Shilling, Sr. age 74, of 946 Valley Drive, Fieldale, died Wednesday November 26, 2008 at his home. He was born September 9, 1934 in Vinton, VA to the late James Wilmer and Mabel Beckner Shilling. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Dovalee Harris Shilling on July 6, 2008, and his brother Jimmy Shilling. He was a graduate of Ridgeway High School, Class of 1952, served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a life member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion, Post #42. He retired as a master millright from Dupont. He was an active member of Patrick Henry Lodge #82, Knights of Pythias in Martinsville, where he was a Past Chancellor, served as Secretary of the lodge for 21 years, was Pythian of the Year in 1991, also the Grand Lodge of Virginia, K of P, where he became a Past Grand Chancellor in 1975, and served on the Grand Lodge Judiciary Com. for 15 years as Chairman, and received the Golden Spur in 1981, which is the highest award in the Pythian Order, in the Supreme Lodge, K of P, where he served as Deputy Supreme Chancellor, Supreme Representative for Virginia, and received the Supreme Chancellors Medal for Outstanding Service, and the Dramatic Order Knights of Khorassan, where he served as Imperial Prince from 1991 to 1993, the highest office in that organization, received two Imperial Prince Medals for outstanding service, and served on the Imperial Palace Law Comm. for 10 years. He served as Secretary of Rajah Temple #195 in Martinsville for over 10 years, and Secretary of Dick Bell Lodge in Bassett for 15 years. He was 50 year Life Member of the Knights of Pythias. He was also a Past President of the Southeastern Pythian Association, and one of it's founding members. He is survived by two sons, William L. "Billy" Shilling, II of Bassett, Gregory A. "Greg" Shilling of Murrells Inlet, SC, one daughter, Regina Lee Shilling of Fieldale, two sisters, Judy Roberts of Athens, GA, and Carolyn Dodson of Vancouver, WS, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. The funeral service will be Monday December 1, 2008 at 2:00 PM in the Roselawn Chapel with S.T. Fulcher, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with Military Honors rendered by the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Honor Guard, and Pythian Graveside Services by Patrick Henry Lodge #82, Knights of Pythias, Martinsville. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service on Monday in the Roselawn Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Pythian Scholarship Fund, C/O Thomas E. Fain, P.O.
