Thomas Staunton "Tom" Martin, Sr. age 79 of Collinsville died Thursday May 13, 2010 at the Virginia Veteran Care Center in Roanoke. He was born March 30, 1931 in Franklin County to the late Homer and Ethelene Sigmon Martin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Virginia Martin.
He attended Ferrum College, and was a graduate of Virginia Tech with a business degree. He taught school in Henry, Franklin, and Rockingham County, and later on at Patrick Henry C.C. He was the owner of Tom Martin Realty. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bassett, Pannill Post #42, American Legion, and The Virginia Board of Realtors. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a charter member of the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard, and was made a Life Member of the Honor Guard. He also served Henry County on the School Board for eight years
He is survived by one son, Thomas S. Martin, Jr. of Martinsville, one daughter, Gwendolyn Martin Bower of Roanoke, three sisters, Corene Simms of Radford, Christine Hager of Fieldale and Ernestine Gilbert of Rocky Mount, and two grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bassett, with President Gordon Hodnett officiating the service. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park with full military rites by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. The Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 16, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. in the chapel of Roselawn Funeral Home, and at other times at the home on 1208 Laurel Lane, Collinsville.
