Obituary

Shelbern Eugene Meeks, 78 of Martinsville passed away from this life and transitioned into God's arms on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Born on March 14, 1941 he was a son of the late Lewis and Gladys Mills Meeks. In addition to his parents, Shelbern was preceded in death by his brothers Ed, James, Albert, and Wilbern Meeks; and his sister, Viola Turner.

Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life include his wife of 53 years Ann Wells Meeks; son, Michael Lewis Meeks and his wife Teri of NC; daughters, Susan Meeks Shuford of NC and Nicole Meeks Maxey of Martinsville; grandchildren Nathan Shuford, Danielle Maxey, Shelly Ann Meeks, Matthew Meeks, Ashley Murray and her husband James, and Austin Brackney and his wife Katie, all of NC; and, three great grandchildren.

Having been proud to serve his county, Shelbern was a dedicated U.S. Army Medical Specialist during the Vietnam War era.

After his military career he worked as a textile technician for E.I. DuPont until his retirement. Upon retirement Shelbern worked part-time for Norris Funeral Service and Collins McKee-Stone Funeral Homes.

Although Shelbern was well-known for his community service and longtime devotion to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church; he was also known for his strong bass-tone as a member of the Spiritualaires Quartet where he would travel with his wife, Ann, and his children spreading the love of Christ through musical ministry.

A funeral service will be conducted 11am Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Gil Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park with military honors provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one-hour prior to the service.

It is suggested that memorial contributions be made in Shelbern's memory to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 1000 Snow Creek Road, Martinsville, VA 24112 or the Veterans Honor Guard, P.O. Box 1002, Collinsville, VA 24078.
