Phyllis Christine Caudill Holbrook, aged 86, of 400 Richardson Road, Collinsville, passed away on March 17, 2016, at Blue Ridge Manor in Martinsville following a lengthy illness. She was born on January 8, 1930, in McDowell County, WV to the late Burlie Smith Caudill and Martha Wilhite Caudill. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Caudill, and two sisters, Lorraine Artis and Iva Mosko.
Surviving are her husband, Merrill J. Holbrook, of the home; two sons and their wives, Christopher J. and Margaret Kay Holbrook of Claymont, DE, and Patrick J. and Katrina L. Holbrook of Collinsville; two grandsons, Justin Holbrook of Baltimore, MD and Austin Holbrook of Wilmington, DE; two great granddaughters, Sophia & Skylar Holbrook of Wilmington, DE; and one sister, Dollie Hunt of Advance, NC.
Phyllis was a graduate of Big Creek High School in War, WV and of Burroughs Business School in Detroit, MI. She worked for the Burroughs Corporation for a time before returning to West Virginia where she also graduated from McLain's Business College in Bluefield, WV. After graduation she taught business technology at McLain's and later married her husband of sixty years Merrill. Phyllis and Merrill continued to reside in Bluefield, VA before relocating to Collinsville in 1964. From that point forward Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother and was also employed as a substitute teacher in the Henry County school system for a number of years. She was a long time member of Smith Memorial UMC in Collinsville, where she was active in the Charles Wesley Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.
Phyllis was laid to rest at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville, following a private funeral service at the Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home on Sunday, March 20, 2016 with the Rev. David Schill officiating the service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Blue Ridge Manor and of Mountain Valley Hospice for the professional and compassionate care provided to Phyllis over the past five year.
