Mr. Melvin Newsome, 87, of Bassett passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020, at his residence. He was born March 31, 1933, to the late Monroe and Hazel Brown Newsome. He was the owner and operator of SW Virginia Battery Distributor for more than 43 years. He was a faithful and longtime member of First Baptist Church Collinsville where he served as deacon, Sunday school director, Sunday school teacher, and Baptist Men's coordinator. He was also a member of the local Gideon organization for many years.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years; Peggy Little Newsome, one son; Melvin Harold Newsome, three brothers; Carl "Sugar Boy" Newsome, Edward Newsome, and Floyd Newsome, and one sister; Dorothy "Dot" N. Bailey.
Surviving are four daughters; Brenda N. Carter, Linda K. Newsome, Sherryl N. Anderson (Jimmy), and Melody N. Oliver (Keith), all of Collinsville. He is also survived by five grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.
The family requests a public viewing without family present on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at First Baptist Church Collinsville with Rev. Larry Cheek officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Burial will be private. COVID-19 restrictions will be in place.
Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home and Burial Park is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested.
