Mrs. Maude Fulcher Hurd, age 90, died peacefully at her home in Axton on May 16, 2014. She was born in Stuart, VA on March 13, 1924 to Frederick Washington Fulcher and Claudie Hutchens Fulcher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Stephen Hurd, and her son, Stephen Thomas Hurd.
She is survived by her daughter, Jenness Hurd Sheldon and her husband Grover of Keysville, VA and grandchildren Katy Clarke and Husband Jon of Phenix, VA and Trey Sheldon of San Francisco, CA, and great-grandchildren, Delaney Jones and Jack Clarke of Phenix, VA; daughter, Dixie Hurd Bowman and husband Ronnie of Chesterfield, VA and grandchildren Adam Bowman and Jesse Bowman of Chesterfield, VA and Nicholas Bowman and Chelsea Bowman of Norfolk, VA; granddaughter Stephanie Hurd and great-granddaughter Madison Hurd of Concord, NC. She is also survived by two sisters, Lena Amos of Stuart, VA and Mae Gregory of Lawsonville, NC, and one brother, Frank Fulcher and wife Betty of Winston-Salem, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hurd was a 1941 graduate of Hardin Reynolds Memorial High School in Critz, VA. She was employed by E.I. DuPont of Martinsville prior to her marriage in 1946 and for several years thereafter. She was a devoted stay-at-home wife and mother for many years and then went to work for the United States Postal Service late in life and continued to work there until her retirement. Mrs. Hurd was a faithful member of Carroll Memorial United Methodist Church until her death. Her pastor and entire church family were very supportive during her illness. One "sister in Christ", Judy Vaughan, was a constant in Mrs. Hurd's life during her final days.
A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Burial Park on May 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Anne Sisson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Roselawn Chapel for one hour before the service.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Mrs. Hurd's dedicated caregivers, Patricia Lawton and Nancy Inman, and to hospice nurse Ann Wilkinson and the other team members at Legacy Hospice of the Piedmont.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carroll Memorial United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
