Lewis Rogers Portis, age 82, formerly of Ridgeway, died on November 28, 2010 at the VA Hospital in Roanoke. He was born in Surry County, NC to the late Sewell and Gladys Creed Portis on September 16, 1928. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by his brother, Walter Portis, and two sisters, Edith Robertson and Kathleen Giffin.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict having risen to the rank of MR-3 on the U.S.S. Amphion AR 13 where he received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a self employed TV repair technician for many years in the Ridgeway area. He attended Starling Avenue Baptist Church, was a member of the DAV and a life-member of the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria B. Portis of Roanoke, one son, Donald W. "Don" Portis of Roanoke, one sister, Roxie O'Neal of Mayodan, NC and one granddaughter.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 01, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the Roselawn Chapel with Dr. David Adkins officiating the service. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with Military graveside honors by the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00 P.M. before the funeral service in the chapel of Roselawn.
