Lacy Earl Campbell age 97 of Ridgeway passed away Monday Dec. 29, 2014, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. He was born Jan. 16, 1917 in Vesuvius, VA to the late Lacy W. and Myrtle Edith Moran Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Danny Campbell, one grandson, Mark Wayne Hubbard, three brothers, LaRue, William, and Leonard Campbell, and two sisters, Betty Ramsey, and Frances Simms.
Mr. Campbell was a WWII veteran, having served in the Western Pacific, advancing to the grade of TEC/5. For his service Mr. Campbell received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He retired from the VA Highway Dept. with 35 years of service as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Mayo Baptist Church where he served as an usher.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dessie Skeen Campbell of the home, one son, James "Jimmy" Campbell of the home, two daughters, Mary Jane Sowder of Bassett, and Karon Hankins of Martinsville, three sisters, Marie Braham of MD, Mildred Earhart of Raphine, VA, and Maxine Anthony of Staunton, VA, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Wednesday Dec. 31, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Roselawn Chapel with Pastor Wayne Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with military graveside honors by the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, and at other times at the home. Pallbearers will be John Edwards, Sean Edwards, Richie Hankins, Jason Hankins, Dwayne Campbell, and Nathan Hankins.
