John Nester Cannaday, age 90, of 184 Mason Court, Martinsville, died on February 19, 2014 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. He was born on June 13, 1923 in Patrick County to the late Steven and Clara Turner Cannaday. In addition to his parents he was preceeded in death by his wife, Velma Tilley Cannaday, two brothers, James Cannaday and Riley Cannaday.
He was a member of Hill Memorial Baptist Church and had retired with over 46 years of service from Hooker Furniture. He was a veteran of WWII, U.S.Army Air Corps, and saw service in Italy, Sardinia, and Bizerte. He received three Bronze Star Medals, American Theatre Medal, and WWII Victory Medal for his service.
He is survived by a step-son, Windall Plaster of Martinsville, a daughter, Tammy Prater of Bassett, two step-daughters, Linda Langley of Grimesland, NC and Sandra Newman of Hickory, NC, three brothers, Paul Cannaday, Aaron Cannaday and Victor Cannaday all of Martinsville, three sisters, Mary Hodges of Bassett, Hester Wilson and Josephine Ferguson both of Martinsville, two grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Moss officiating the service. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard presenting Military honors. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the chapel of Roselawn.
