Joann Smithson Byerly age 73 of Martinsville passed away Jan. 22, 2018 at Sovah Health of Martinsville. She was born Dec. 24, 1944 in Welch, WV to the late Leonard and Edna Leddie Burks Smithson. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by husband Ray Byerly, two brothers, Harley and William "Buddy" Smithson, and one sister, Elizabeth "Kitty" Dickerson.

Mrs. Byerly was a member of Clearview Gospel Mission, was a graduate of Welch High School Class of 1962, and had worked for Tultex, Pannill Knitting, and Ashmore for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Patty and David Gusler of Summerfield, NC, one grandson, Will Gusler of Summerfield, NC, and one sister, Evelena Akers of Axton.

Her funeral service will be Friday Jan. 26, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Roselawn Chapel with Pastor Blonnie Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, prior to the service on Friday. Condolences may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
