Jerry Anthony "Tony" Bishop, 73, of Bassett, died Thursday morning, August 29, 2013 at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC after a short illness with cancer. He was born September 13, 1939 to the late Bertie Harbour Bishop and John Henry Bishop of Bassett.
He served his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Iceland. He was retired from Miller Brewing Co., Eden, NC. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bassett. He was an active member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge, Kazim Shrine Temple, Roanoke, current treasurer of the Piedmont Shrine Club, the director of the Piedmont Men's Club, member of the Piedmont T's, Amvets Club, Eagles Club, Elks Club, and Knights of Pythias. He was a volunteer road runner for the Shiners' hospital. Tony mostly loved golfing, reading, spending time at home watching old western movies, and feeding birds in his yard with his wife.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law James Cassady. He is survived by his wife Judith "Judy" Ramey Bishop of 51 years, his sister, Lillie Bishop Cassady; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Bishop and Brenda Bishop, and one special child that he loved dearly, Jeremy Rotenberry; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and one one great-great niece. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Bassett with Dr. Lew Bennett officiating. It was Mr. Bishop's wish to be cremated.
