James Harvey McFarland, age 96, of Martinsville, died on February 29, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center, Martinsville. He was born on September 24, 1915 in Leaksville, NC to the late Oscar and Hattie Taylor McFarland. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his first wife, Mabel Smith McFarland, his daughter, Janice Ann Coughlin, and three sisters, Ophelia Mize, Margaret Bowyer and Elsie Lancaster.
He was part owner of the Martinsville Wholesale Grocery. He had taught math in GED classes. He was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Chruch, and a member of Piedmont Masonic Lodge in Martinsville. He was a WWII veteran with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Petty McFarland of Burlington, NC, his son, George McFarland of Martinsville, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
His graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, March 02, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Roselawn Burial Park with Dr. David Adkins officiating the service and military rites presented by the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
