James "Bud" Elwood Marshall, of Martinsville, went to be home with the Lord on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. He was born on May 11, 1932 in Athens, WV and was preceded in death by his parents; Earnest Sherman Marshall and Cynthia Ann Hicks-Marshall, brother; Everette Marshall, and life partner; Christine Lawson Gilley. Bud worked for Olga Coal Company in Coretta, WV, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He later retired from R.P. Thomas Trucking Co. in Martinsville, Virginia. Bud was a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and never met a stranger. He was a friend to everyone and went out of his way for both family and friends to do whatever he could to help them. He earned the title "Papa Bud" with his loving kindness and grateful heart toward his adopted family, Jesse and Brenda Gilley and children, and looking after his well-being was an honor. Papa made your day with his happy countenance and joyful attitude. He treated his beloved Christine like a queen all her life and loved and enjoyed her children, Jeannie, Wayne and Jesse (Randy) Gilley, along with their children and grandchildren. They all enjoyed spending time with him. He would not let the children leave the house without giving them a gift of some kind! He truly appreciated each and everyone one of us and loved us with a genuine heart! He loved talking about his childhood and all his happy memories. His adopted family he leaves behind, Jesse and Brenda Gilley and Michelle Lincoln and children, will all miss him so greatly! To honor "Papa Bud" a private memorial service will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations by check to MHC Warming Center, P.O. Box 388, Collinsville, Virginia 24078; or cash donations to CashApp: $MHCWarmingCenter.
