Herndon A. "Holley" Hollandsworth age 83, formerly of Bassett, died Tuesday September 4, 2012 in Valley Healthcare Center in Chilhowie, VA. He was born March 16, 1929 in Franklin County to the late James A. and Lillie Pearl Spencer Hollandsworth. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by two brothers Oscar and William Hollandsworth, and three sisters, Nora Wolfe, Vergie Amos, and Doris Cannady.
He was a member of the US Army during WWII, having served in Germany, and worked for the Corps of Engineers during the construction of Philpot Dam. He was a member of Union Chapel Christian Church, former member of the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He retired from American of Marion, VA after over 35 years of constructing specialty wood furniture products for many furniture companies.
He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Hollandsworth of Chilhowie, two sons, Benjamin and Perry Hollandsworth of Bristol, TN, Step-son Joel Clark of Manassas, three daughters, Connie Cassady, Renee Ashworth, and Susan Walker all of Bassett, two step-daughters, Cheryl Grazier of Chilhowie, and Cammie Hambrick of Ferrum, four brothers, Joseph, Wayne, and Louis Hollandsworth all of Bassett, and Carl Hollandsworth of CA, two sisters, Ruby Adkins of Martinsville, and Jean Cassell of Bassett, fourteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
The graveside service will be Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren Cemetery with Pastor Terry Covey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside honors by the Martinsville and Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the graveside from 12:30 PM until time for the service.
