Obituary

Glen Edward Swinney, 85, of Axton, Virginia peacefully passed on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024. He was born on November 30, 1938, to the late Robert Jasper Swinney and Carrie Marie Payne Swinney.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Helen Akers, Bonnie Sawyers, and brothers James Swinney and Noah Swinney.

Mr. Swinney loved to play music and sing, especially with his granddaughters. He was a kind and gentle man, who would give anyone the shirt off his back. His creativity knew no bounds, as he was constantly coming up with new ideas, and could find a way to fix anything. His even temper and joyful personality made him a friend to all, often filling his interactions with laughter and jokes. He was a member of Beckham United Methodist Church.

Those left to carry on his memory include wife, Sandra Barbour Swinney; son, Bruce Swinney (Tammy); daughter, Margie Martin (Rodney); grandchildren, Susan King (Larry Mabe), Michelle Haak (Ryan), Kristen Norris (Bobby); step-grandson, Nicholas King (Wendy); great-grandchildren, Adisyn Haak, Wyatt Norris, Eliza Mabe, and Sophia Mabe; step-great-grandchildren, Briana Mabe, Candice Mabe, Zoey Mabe, Finleigh King, and Fletcher King; brothers, Marshall Swinney (Wanda), Samuel Swinney (Karen), and Charles Swinney (Mildred); and sister, Maxine Mays (Steve); his beloved Barbour family, many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Sherri White and Barbara Felts.

A special thank you to the staff of Mulberry Creek Nursing Facility and Mountain Valley Hospice for their care in Mr. Swinney's final days.

A memorial service will be held at Roselawn Chapel in Martinsville, Virginia on June 24th at 2 p.m. Visitation will occur an hour prior to the service and other times at the family home on Jasper Lane in Axton, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Swinney's memory may be made to Beckham United Methodist Church.
