George Thomas "Tommy" McFarland age 72 of Martinsville passed away on January 10, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. He was born April 16, 1941 in Martinsville to the late James and Mabel Leona Smith McFarland. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his only sister Janice Ann McFarland Coughlin in 2010.
Tommy was a graduate of Martinsville High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He went to school after his military service and became a surveyor. He worked in Emporia for many years where he was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Emporia Golf Club. He later moved back to Martinsville, and worked for J.A. Gustin, Inc. as a surveyor. He had attended Starling Avenue Baptist Church with his family.
Tommy is survived by one nephew, James A. Coughlin of Hingham, MA, one great nephew also of Hingham, MA, Spencer Coughlin, very special friends, Mary Lou Jard McFarland of Virginia Beach, and Roy Thomas of Martinsville, and his special caregivers, Tracy Blackard and Will Lawson of Martinsville.
The graveside service will be Friday January 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Roselawn Burial Park with Dr. David Adkins officiating. Military Graveside Honors will be by the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
