Former Martinsville Police SGT E. Wayne Reynolds, age 90, formerly of Grayson St., Martinsville died Sunday Jan. 30, 2011 at Stanleytown Health Care. He was born August 27, 1920 at Meadows of Dan, VA to the late Volney Prentiss and Alma Lutita Scott Reynolds. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife Kathleen Clark Reynolds, his three brothers, Hampton, Glen, and Penn Reynolds, his three sisters, Maggie Wood, Agnes Pendleton, and Doris Wood. He was the last surviving member of his family.
He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Navy Reserve, and then the U.S. Navy. He was a former member of the Martinsville City Police Department where he rose to the rank of Sergeant, and was one of the investigators, and assisted in the arrest of the "Martinsville Seven". He worked in construction as a supervisor, and later owned and operated Reynolds Restaurant for 17 years until he retired. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. He was 32nd Degree Mason and held membership in Magnolia Lodge #20 in Columbus, Ohio, AF & AM, and was also a member of the Scottish Rites, and Kazim Temple in Roanoke. He was also a member of the United Commercial Travelers.
He is survived by one step-son Jerry Jarrett, and 17 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Tuesday Feb. 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Roselawn Chapel with Rev. Ron Gardner and Rev. Francis Martin officiating. Interment will follow with graveside military honors by the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard, and the Martinsville City Police Department Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
