Obituary

mer Eugene Martin, Sr., 91, formerly of Henry County passed away on July 14, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Salem.  He was born in Bassett on September 9, 1926 to the late Ira S. Martin and Dollie Wood Martin Rogers.  In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Alfred, Linwood, and Calvin Martin.

He was a graduate of Bassett High School class of 1947 and attended Perry Business College.  He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict where he was a Technical Sergeant and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, NDSM, and the Good Conduct Medal. He had worked with the U.S. Postal service for 27 years in Martinsville.

He is survived by his sons, Elmer Martin, Jr. of Horsepasture, Larry Martin of Martinsville, and Robert Martin of Collinsville, his daughters, Mary Lou Martin of Boones Mill and Sherri Freeman of Springfield, VA, his sister, Imogene Biggs of Patrick Springs, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and his friend and Mother of his children, Dorris Roach.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Roselawn Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Gross officiating the service.  Entombment will follow in the Roselawn Burial Park Mausoleum with military honors presented by the  Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
