Obituary

David Voss Lawless age 63 of Collinsville died Sunday October 30, 2011 at his caregiver's home in Roanoke. He was born February 14, 1948 in Henry County to the late William A. and Trudy Voss Lawless. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his two brothers, Leon and Guy Lawless, his six sisters, Marie Holt, Ailene Perdue, Lucy Wood, Lois Moran, Wilma Turner, and Maude Howell. He was the last surviving member of his family.
He was a graduate of Bassett High School, and attended Blackberry Baptist Church. He was a police officer at Bassett, Stanleytown, and Henry County from 1971 to 1999, and also worked for Collins Funeral Service and more recently, was a funeral attendant with Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. He was a Charter member and past president of FOP Lodge #37, past member of the Board of Directors of West Piedmont Police Training Academy, past instructor at New River Training Academy, the Virginia Assoc. Of Vol. Rescue Squads, a member of the Board of Governors of Virginia Assoc. Of Vol. Rescue Squads, one of the first in Henry County to take and pass EMT and Shock Trauma Class, instructor for Red Cross CPR, Vehicle Extrication, Farm Machinery Extrication, and Hazardous Materials Handling. He was the Bassett Rescue Squad Jr. Advisor from 1975 to 1979, and was an active member of Bassett Rescue Squad, and Henry County EMS for 40 years.
He is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins in this area, and his Special Friends and Caregivers for the last several years, Kippy Cassell of Axton, and Dustin Hazlewood of Roanoke.
The funeral service will be Thursday Nov. 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Blackberry Baptist Church with Dr. G.H. Vaughn officiating, with the assistance of Kippy Cassell and Dustin Hazlewood. Interment will follow at Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery in Patrick County with honors provided by the Henry County Sheriff's Department, and the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends will be received from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday Nov. 2, 2011 at Blackberry Baptist Church, and at other times at the home of Karen Smith, 1770 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett.
