Corene Martin Rakes Simms passed away on Friday, March, 15, 2024 in Fairlawn, Virginia at the age of 99.  She was born on January 17, 1925 in West Virginia to Homer and Ethelene Martin. She was raised in Endicott, Virginia, and lived in Bassett and Collinsville before moving to the Radford area. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kermit Rakes, husband Edsel Simms, brother Thomas Martin(Virginia), sister Christine Hager(Bill) and brother-in-law Lee Gilbert. She is survived by her sister Ernestine Gilbert. Also surviving are nieces Gwen Bower(Mark), Cathy Stanton(Mike), nephews Greg Gilbert(Gloria) and Stan Martin(Christy).  As well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Corene attended Ferrum Training School, graduated from Radford College, and taught 4th grade for many years. She was a longtime member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford. She had a great love for her family, traveling the world, baking and entertaining.

The family is grateful for the many wonderful neighbors, friends, and church family who helped her in the last few years.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 11:00 at the Roselawn Funeral Chapel in Martinsville, Virginia. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
