Obituary

Barry James Minter age 66 of St. Petersburg, FL, and formerly of Martinsville, passed away Thursday July 17, 2014 at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital Hospice in Bay Pines, FL. Barry was born Sept. 19, 1947 in Martinsville to the late Russell and Eliza Wilson Wood. In addition to his biological parents, he was also predeceased by his adoptive parents, James Howard and Eleanor Annette Wilson Minter, one sister, Frances Wood Parker, and one nephew, Andrew Lars Been.

Barry was a graduate of Martinsville High School, Class of 1965, and attended Calvary Christian Church. He joined the US Army and served in Vietnam from 1965-1966 in the 1ST Air Cavalry Unit, attached to the 82nd Airborne. While serving in the Army for 20 years he was promoted to the rank of E-8, 1SG and received the following decorations for Valor and service to his country; Purple Heart plus one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachute Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, 2 Overseas Bars, Gold Recruiter Badge with 3 Sapphire Stars, Gold Recruiter Ring, NCO Prof Dev Ribbon w/2 device, Driver Badge w/Bar. He also had a Associates Degree from the DOD. After his military retirement he worked for Ramey Motors in Princeton, WV. Barry is a Life Member of the 1ST Calvary Association. Barry Minter was a true patriot for his country, and loved the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

He is survived by 2 sons, Brian Minter of Roanoke, VA and Brad Minter of Seminole FL., 2 brothers, Lynwood Wood of Country Club Hills, IL, and Scotty Shelton of Houston, TX, 2 sisters, Ann Been and husband Paul of Grand Junction, CO, Eleanor Story of Atlanta, GA, and one granddaughter, Keely Madison Minter, and very special friend and caregiver Alice Bailey.

The funeral service with will be conducted on Wednesday July 23, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Roselawn Chapel with Chaplain Paul Been (Barry's brother in law) officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by the US Army. Pallbearers will be Brad Minter, Brian Minter, Lynwood Wood, Scotty Shelton, David Barry Been, Phil Sparks, Jerry Haley, and Jeff Been. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the Roselawn Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Barry may be made to Wounded Warriors Project,
